{"id":26863,"date":"2016-10-11T15:50:29","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T13:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosufficienza.dartmoon.dev\/euz-an-extraordinary-place\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T16:54:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T15:54:29","slug":"euz-an-extraordinary-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.autosufficienza.it\/en\/euz-an-extraordinary-place\/","title":{"rendered":"EUZ\u2026 an extraordinary place\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"244\"><strong>\u201cEnergie und Umweltzentrum\u201d \u2013 Energy and Environment Centre \u2013 is an independent, self-managed association that has been working since 1981 on renewable energy, energy and water conservation, sustainable building and environmental education.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"546\">Its story begins as follows: in order to give practical form to these ideas, in the 1980s a group of young people involved in the anti-nuclear movement purchased and renovated a former school near Hanover, through a nationwide fundraising campaign, transforming it into a working demonstration model.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"950\">The integration of sustainable building methods, energy and water saving systems, and renewable energy sources has reduced the building\u2019s overall energy consumption by 70% and drinking water use by 50%.<br data-start=\"750\" data-end=\"753\" \/>Their slogan, <strong><em data-start=\"767\" data-end=\"791\">\u201cThere is another way\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, initially referring to nuclear power, thus became a tangible example that would later inspire citizens, associations, builders and public institutions alike.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"1756\">Today, on the Centre\u2019s 18,000 square metres of land, there is an additional low-energy house built in 1991 and a passive house with virtually zero energy consumption, built in 2000. These are complemented by an organic garden, a constructed wetland system, rainwater harvesting systems, a pellet heating system, several solar thermal collectors for hot water production, and photovoltaic systems feeding the electricity produced into the grid.<br data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1398\" \/>Over the years, the hundreds of citizens, designers, system installers, builders and public administrators who have passed through the Centre were able to see clear proof\u2014 even before attending the theoretical courses\u2014that these so-called \u201cutopias\u201d could quite easily be turned into reality with a bit of practical common sense, both ecological and economic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1758\" data-end=\"2060\">And in some way, EUZ seems to have succeeded in influencing its wider context: not far away is the Solvis solar panel factory\u2014the world\u2019s first \u201cpassive\u201d factory\u2014while the Kronsberg district of Hanover stands as an example of low-energy social housing, with passive houses and wind power installations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2420\"><strong><em data-start=\"2062\" data-end=\"2090\">\u201cPractice is our strength\u201d<\/em><\/strong> is another of its mottos, and indeed the e.u.[z.] academy has been offering professional qualifications for 30 years, with a strong focus on practical experience, through seminars and conferences.
