The patron saint of Wales, St David, held deep respect for nature: the land was the primary source of food for his simple and healthy diet, and he taught his followers the importance of living in harmony with the environment around them.
In more recent times, Gerard Morgan-Grenville founded the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, central Wales, which over the years has become the heart of the Welsh environmental movement.
Established in 1974 to experiment with alternative energy sources, the centre has taken on a significant role and is now a highly respected ecological laboratory as well as a clear source of inspiration and information. It welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year, all coming to discover its remarkable work.
The Centre is in a constant state of evolution and adaptation: new and stimulating projects, models and ideas emerge every day, and research into new approaches to environmental challenges continues through the “Zero Carbon Britain” project.
More recently, it gave rise to the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education, an important centre dedicated to environmental education, further enriching an already extensive programme of courses and lessons.
What can you see at CAT?
- the widest range of renewable systems installed throughout the site,
- examples of environmentally friendly building construction,
- energy production from renewable sources,
- sustainability in the home,
- eco-friendly sanitation systems,
- organic farming,
- sustainable forest management,
- composting and proper waste management.
It is a unique and invaluable hands-on demonstration centre, a living laboratory offering a wide range of real-life examples of sustainable solutions.
In addition, the centre is located right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, famous for its breathtaking landscapes.
CAT also runs a free information service, answering questions on a wide range of topics by phone, letter or email, five days a week. For larger projects, a consultancy service is also available. The Centre for Alternative Technology also publishes books on a variety of “green” topics.
